The Burnham Market Traders Association began in 1985 with three founding members meeting for a drink at The Hoste Arms, these being W.Hollis who at the time owned “Monkey Puzzle”, Les Rayner who ran a pottery behind Satchells and Peter Groom of Grooms Bakery. At the same time Mike Stubbings and then wife Gae had been contemplating the same thing. So, in September 1985 the first meeting was called, with W.Hollis acting as chairman. They had a positive 90% attendance from local traders.
The first year saw a Christmas tree being erected and lit up on the post office green. On top of this various events were organised in the run up to Christmas. Since then the Christmas decorations have grown and grown. Today all the trees in Burnham Market are illuminated along with the two churches; St. Marys and Sutton cum Ulph. All shops are now encouraged to decorate their own premises.
The Traders don’t just concentrate on the Christmas decorations anymore, they actively advertise the village and its extraordinary array of individual shops. They also seek to maintain the community spirit that makes Burnham Market the unique place that it is.
